21 make your mark, heavy and dark

that's the cheer the teachers did in the pep rally for the tennessee comprehensive assessment program achievement test in the spring of 7th grade. it has nothing to do with anything here except that i have a sizable readership of page middle school alums and i wanted to mess with their heads...

ANYWAY, there's a little thing called election day coming up and, thanks to a quiet friday and some quality time with the board of election commissioners for the city of chicago website, i think i may actually really really want my congressman to be a 28-year-old green party candidate whose prior experience is summed up as "peace activist, french teacher." because, well, that sounds just lovely. and this picture's pretty great too.

To quote (what else?) the Simpsons:

"The politics of failure have failed. We need to make them work again."

i find his use of the word "respect" quite bold. especially when coupled with the AP government class project earnestness of the hand-on-chin/hancock-out-of-the-head pose.

does "sizeable" count as "2"?

it is no wonder we've all turned out the way we have, when our middle school was a bitchy looking panther that was perched on a giant red-lettered "PMS".

um...THREE. at least. and, really, who's to say there aren't quiet hidden people out there that we do not know about? a prospect both flattering and very creepy.

OMYGOODNESS, I forgot about partner. Frowning forever!!!

(chuckles to self at own funniness)

that did occur to me. it was hard to refrain.

do you remember this one?

"Gooo, TCAP! Go, gooo TCAP!
Lean to the left!
Lean to the right!
Pick up your pencil and
WRITE! WRITE! WRITE!"

(...hangs head again)

i think the question we should all be asking ourselves is why did we have a pep rally for a TEST?

Linda said...

and I, in turn, am asking the question why we didn't have a pep rally for ALL tests? eh? EH???

oline said...

i do feel there is a shocking lack of pep rallys in adult life.

Linda said...

I want a pep rally before performance reviews, and double dates with awkward people.

Megan said...

Was I there for these pep rallies? I seriously can not remember these pep rallies at all.

oline said...

i only remember the one, but maybe we had them all three years...

ps. i love that we have 2 separate strands of high school retrospective going on right now.

You know, he kind of looks like a young Mike Myers before he left the Toronto comedy circuit to work on SNL in the early 90's.

Go for it. Vote for this guy. The Republicans are feeble-minded dinguses and the Democrats are as useless as tits on rain barrels.

Actually, he's probably a socialist. I wonder if he's single... maybe we could swing by his campaign office when I'm down?

I just watched Matt Reichel's YouTube video. He's not hot. He's more like Christian Slater than Mike Myers.

He does have some fire in his belly, though.

oline said...

christian slater: the early years was pretty hot though. the later years, yes, not so much.

and i'm glad to see the subtle Chicago Is So Awesome war i waged in my last email was so fruitful!

Just reading these...sorry for the late comment. My school had pep rallies before our CATS state testing, and I am proud to say that I never cheered about making your mark heavy and dark. Although, I might have done that to my class just to be ridiculous if I had remembered. How you remember EVERYTHING is beyond me!

i like to think it's because i was mentally predestined to be a biographer. because that makes it a little less creepy.
