2 o young oline and the astounding technology of the TIME cd-rom

[trans.: We received our TIME CD-ROM. It is really neat. It just astounds me, all of the technology that we have these days. A few years ago they were unthought of now things are a part of every day life. It really is astounding. The seemed to drag along slowly. To quicken the pace, I watched Scarlett. Bad idea. After that things just got slower. The soaps were really stupid, as always, so as I watched it mostly went over my head. This evening I stepped on a tack. It hurt like the dickens. I assume it has finally stopped bleeding.]

Despite growing up in the South, I am still not sure what "hurt like the dickens" really means. Does it hurt like Charles Dickens? Why does Charles Dickens hurt? What did he do?
