to share a story i only get to share once every year: my great memory of elementary school was that this was the day all the desserts- the puddings, the cakes, the applesauce- were dyed green, and i couldn't eat them because my mother had told me that when foods weren't the color they were supposed to be they could kill you.

sage advice. of course, if that were strictly observed, the only things you could eat in a public school cafeteria would be beige or beige-ish gray.
i do remember cafeteria pizza being really really good. and the pudding cups. oh the pudding cups.
